Since then, they have created additional specialized programs to compliment the general Spanish curriculum. In addition, the HisAmericano Institute has also begun to offer customized classes to local organizations and agencies in Durham, including Duke University Medical Center and Durham Regional Hospital. Programs are designed to build communication and pronunciation skills rather than writing skills. To achieve this, the HispAmericano Institute teaches Spanish based on the following principles: Ö Learning groups can have no more than 10 participants. Ö Teachers are native Spanish speaking. Ö Classes emphasize pronunciation and conversational skills. Ö There is the absolute minimum of English utilized during class time. Students are encouraged not to translate in their own language.
