Annual Assembly at El
Centro Hispano
Every
December, El Centro Hispano hosts an Annual Assembly for members of the
organization with the purpose of:

Electing
new members to the
Executive Board
of El Centro Hispano,
q
Commemorating our anniversary,
q
Reporting
to our members the programmatic accomplishments of the organization and
its financial position,
q
Celebrating
the accomplishments the community and the organization had throughout
the past year
This event
has traditionally taken place at El Centro Hispano and is open to all
current members of El Centro Hispano as well as special guests. We
normally accompany the event with dinner and some cultural

Nuestra Fiesta de la
Salud ¡En Acción!
Since 1999
El Centro Hispano has organized the largest health fair in Durham County
that targets the Latino population. Nuestra Fiesta de la Salud
aims to link members of the community with programs and services that
can improve their overall health and well being. In the past it has
attracted over 1,000 people annually and included the participation of
more than 65 agencies each year.
In 2005,
Nuestra Fiesta de la Salud
¡En Acción!
was held in August, and focused not only in giving information on
important health and human service services in Durham but included
various physical activities, sports tournament and hands-on educational
workshops and activities with the goal of making Latinos in Durham
County become more Active!

Nuestra
Fiesta de la Salud-Screenings
at El Centro Hispano
In order to
increase the community’s health awareness and access to health services,
El Centro Hispano holds yearly health screenings in the community.
Traditionally they have taken place at the same time as Nuestra
Fiesta de la Salud, but this year they will be their own event. Some
of the screenings that have taken place have been:

Playin’ It Safe/Jugando Seguro
In recognition
of National STD (sexually transmitted disease) Awareness Month in the
United States during the month of April, El Centro Hispano holds
Playin’ It Safe/ Jugando Seguro a bilingual/bicultural fun-filled
soccer and basketball event with free HIV/AIDS and Syphilis screenings
as well as free glucose (diabetes) screenings. Free educational
information and materials are also distributed.
El Centro
Hispano and the Health Program collaborate with the Durham County Health
Department and Lincoln Community Health Center to promote healthy sexual
practices and the importance of STD testing.
